Dallas Cowboys sign LB Quinton Caver
Per Mickey, Cowboys sign OLB Quentin Caver & release Tony Dixon
From the Ranch Report. Caver was a former 2nd round pick of the Eagles out of Arkansas. Mick said the Cowboys were very interested in him coming out of college. He was in the same draft as Quincy Carter and Tony Dixon. He was picked 55th, one pick ahead of Dixon.
LB Quinton Caver( 6-4, 227, 4.69) Arkansas
Notes: Three-sport standout (football, basketball and track) in high school. Had to sit out the 1996 season while retaking the ACT. Started twice at OLB in ’97. One of four linebackers who rotated at two inside positions in ’98. Started and often stood out in ’99 and 2000. Had 70 stops, eight for loss, 1½ sacks in ’99 and capped the year with two tackles for loss, a sack and two passes broken up in the Cotton Bowl against Texas. Was named Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week three times in 2000 and won first-team All-SEC honors. Ended the season with 91 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, two sacks, an interception, a blocked kick and five passes broken up.
Positives: Good work ethic and dedication. Wants to be a good player. Plays hard and competes. Hustles and chases. Tall and rangy. Disrupts passing lanes due to his height and wingspan. Covers a lot of ground and is very good in long pursuit. Has some pass-rush ability off the edge. Can and has played both inside and outside. Is improving and made some big plays in pass coverage in 2000.
Negatives: Lacks bulk and power. Still does not have a really good feel for zone drops. Tends to play too upright and will get knocked around a bit when he does not bend his legs and get into a good position. A bit of a strider and does not have really quick change of direction.
Summary: Getting better. Has ability and room to grow, but he must learn to play with his pad level lower.
