TIDBIT: It was never better than 26 years ago this week, when the late Harvey Martin strolled by the visitors locker room beneath Texas Stadium and interrupted a solemn postgame gathering of beaten Washingtonians by tossing a now infamous funeral wreath onto the floor. Not only had the Cowboys come back to stun their most despised rivals in that regular-season finale, and claim the NFC East crown, but a blowout win by the Bears against the Cardinals knocked Washington out of the playoffs altogether based on a point differential. "Take this back to Washington with you," Martin supposedly declared upon hurling the wreath into the locker room, where then Washington coach Jack Pardee reportedly was fighting back tears. Martin claimed he got the wreath the week before the big game, from D.C. He said a note was attached: "Sympathy for an impending loss." And the Dallas-Washington rivalry hasn't been as affecting since, either. Hasn't really been a rivalry, given the Cowboys' dominance the last several seasons. Hasn't even been a source of much anticipation given Washington's near absolute ineptitude during the Norv Turner, Marty Schottenheimer, Steve Spurrier reigns, or Dallas' stumbling under Dave Campo. Hasn't even been noteworthy, given that, as a result of much of the above, virtually nothing of importance has been on the line of late between here and the nation's capital. Until now. For real.
