Zimmer and Payton granted permission to interview for other jobs...

The Dallas Cowboys are out of the playoffs but both the team's coordinators are in the hunt for head coach positions with other franchises. The Cowboys have granted permission for defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer to interview with the St. Louis Rams and for offensive coordinator Sean Payton to meet with the Green Bay Packers, ESPN.com confirmed. On Monday, the Rams fired Mike Martz and the Packers dismissed Mike Sherman.

It is not yet known when the interviews will take place.Zimmer is one of four candidates identified to date in St. Louis, where Rams officials are said to prefer a new head coach with a defensive background. St. Louis will interview Chicago defensive coordinator Ron Rivera this week.Last year, Zimmer, 49, turned down the head coaching post at the University of Nebraska and received a significant pay increase from the Cowboys after doing so. The Cowboys' defense ranked 10th in the NFL in 2005, its first season playing a 3-4 front.A 12-year NFL veteran, Zimmer joined the Dallas staff in 1994 under Barry Switzer as a secondary coach and was elevated to coordinator in 2000. Before that, Zimmer coached 15 seasons in the college ranks. It is believed that a few other teams with vacancies may seek permission to interview Zimmer for the openings.Payton, 42, joined coach Bill Parcells' staff in 2003 after NFL stints with Philadelphia (1997-98) and the New York Giants (1999-2002). He was the Dallas assistant head coach/quarterbacks in 2003-2004 before moving up to coordinator this season. In addition to Payton, the Packers are expected to interview Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress and incumbent defensive coordinator Jim Bates, among others.Senior writer Len Pasquarelli covers the NFL for ESPN.com.
