Today’s combined workout against the Hamburg Sea Devils was a measuring stick to see exactly where every Rhein Fire player stands after three weeks of practice.
“This practice gave them an opportunity to play football and it also gives them a fair chance to make this team,” said Head Coach Jim Tomsula.
The Sea Devils set the tone in the beginning with a pair of touchdown drives and a few deep balls. With the defense running minimal plays it was hard for them to get a tighter grip on their offense.
“I noticed a few missed assignments on the deep balls and we can’t have that. You have to make those plays,” said Tomsula.
After a couple of series into practice the Fire started to come alive and showcased that tempo and excitement shown in previous combined workouts.
On a first down and goal the Sea Devils took a shot toward the back of the end zone only to be greeted by Fires corner Therrian Fontenot. Fontenot had the opposite end zone in his eyes, but after massive screams from coaches on the sideline yelling, ‘Kneel on it.’, he opted to take the knee inches from the one yard line.
“I figure that they were going to take the shot so after that all I had to do was trust my eyes and my techniques. I wanted to take it back, but coach didn’t want to see me take it 109 yards,” said a chuckling Fontenot.
Offensively Henson moved the ball with a nice mix of passing routes. Henson’s target of the day was wide receiver Kendrick Starling. On the opening series Henson went deep to a lanky 6’0 Starling on a sideline route. The ball was thrown picture perfect, but he boggled and dropped it at the last minute.
As he ran back to the huddle Coach Tomsula slowly pointed to his head and animatedly said the word focus. With a subtle head nod to acknowledge that he understood coach, on his next series he grabbed a 24-yard slant from Henson.
“I think today’s practice came together well and it showed with our play on the field. It’s cut week so we’re all trying to make impressions to show what we can offer the team,” said Starling.
Henson finished the scrimmage four for six on 59 yards. Henson likes the forward progress that his team made today, but he knows that it has to continue until Saturday.
“This contest is a good indication to show where we are. I was happy with it, because everything came together very smooth and sharp.”
Coach Tomsula was equally impressed and went on to say that, “Today some guys made this team.”
Rhein Fire players have one more opportunity to grab a roster spot in Saturday’s final scrimmage.
