NFL Free Agency News: The pros and cons regarding Kevin Mawae
It's already March 10th, yet the NFL still hasn't officially commenced with its free agency period. Like most fans, I'm virtually foaming at the mouth for some action.
The Miami Dolphins have already been linked to a handful of prominent free agents to be, but the only one that seems to stick in my mind is former New York Jets center Kevin Mawae. Maybe it’s because I have an indelible image of him dominating Zach Thomas, or maybe it’s just that I am enamored with the idea of finally having a Pro Bowl caliber offensive lineman back in the fold after so many years of mediocrity. Whatever it is, Mawae has become more than just a passing interest. So without further adieu, I am going to humbly offer up my list of pros and cons of this most intriguing free agent to be:
Pros:
-Mawae has for years been regarded as arguably the best center in the league. His blend of athleticism, power, and technique would be a welcomed site, especially in the running game. Could you imagine seeing him pulling for Ronnie or Ricky in the open field? What a wonderful sight that would be.
-Mawae is a six-time Pro Bowler. Its not every day that you come across a player of his caliber in free agency.
-Mawae was cut by the New York Jets, so he wants to stay in the AFC East to exact some measure of revenge against his former team. Better he do that with the Miami Dolphins than with our not-so-friendly neighbors up in Buffalo.
-At the age of 35, Mawae is still considered middle age for an NFL lineman of his pedigree. If healthy, he should have several years left in the tank.
Cons
-At the age of 35, Mawae could also be one step away from mediocrity. It’s hard to tell, so for now, his age is both a pro and con.
-Mawae suffered a torn triceps last year, which forced him to miss 10 games. Triceps injuries have often signaled the end of a career for an offensive lineman, so the fact that he suffered one at the age of 35 is a bit scary.
-Mawae will likely command a relatively-high salary. Signing him could prevent us from having a chance at other high-profile free agents, such as quarterback Drew Brees.
Well, that's all I could come up with thus far. As far as I'm concerned, the pros outweigh the cons at this point. I say sign him as soon as possible.
