Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Drew Pearson said Monday he is upset the club signed Terrell Owens, who mocked the franchise's revered star logo while with San Francisco and Philadlphia.

"There used to be a lot of pride in who wore that star on the helmet," Pearson said in an interview with Sirius NFL Radio.

"(Owens) is a former 49er, a former Eagle," Pearson said. "He's a former bad boy and, yes, it bothers me (the Cowboys signed Owens), especially (because) he's playing the position that I played."

Pearson's stance is shared by many of the team's fans. Many fans also are concerned Owens could destroy the Cowboys' chemistry.

The Eagles suspended Owens at midseason last year for conduct detrimental to the team, a charge that stemmed from his contentious relationship with quarterback Donovan McNabb.

While with the 49ers, Owens clashed with quarterback Jeff Garcia. After joining the Eagles in 2004, Owens questioned Garcia's sexual orientation in an interview with Playboy.

In September 2000 while with San Francisco, Owens angered Cowboys fans when he celebrated on the team's mid-field star at Texas Stadium after the two touchdowns he scored.

Last season, Owens celebrated on the star logo in the end zone at Texas Stadium after scoring touchdowns for the Eagles.

Philadelphia released Owens last week. On Saturday, he signed a three-year deal with the Cowboys that could pay him as much as $25 million, including a guaranteed $10 million this season.

Pearson, who retired as Dallas' all-time leading receiver in 1983 after 11 seasons, suggested Tom Landry never would have allowed the team to sign a player as reviled as Owens.

"Coach Landry wouldn't need a Terrell Owens to win football games," Pearson said.

Landry coached the Cowboys from their inception in 1960 until he was fired shortly after Jerry Jones bought the team in 1989.

"(Landry) would find other players or other ways to be successful instead of bringing in someone who has the possibility of disrupting what he was trying to build," Pearson said.

Pearson is a frequent critic of Jones' decisions and has bashed the owner before for not selecting more players from the Landry era, including himself, for induction into the team's Ring of Honor.

Pearson retired with 489 receptions for 7,822 yards and 48 touchdowns. A three-time Pro Bowl selection, he averaged 16 yards per reception and recorded two 1,000-yard receiving seasons.
