IRVING, Texas - The Cowboys are headed back to Oxnard, Calif., for one more year of training camp. Now that has had been known for about two years.
But the team officially announced the start and end dates for the 3½-week camp on Tuesday, announcing the Cowboys will depart for Oxnard on July 27. The Cowboys will arrive on that Thursday and hold an opening press conference with owner and general manager Jerry Jones and head coach Bill Parcells on Friday, July 28, before the team's first practice on Saturday.
In a schedule similar to last season, the Cowboys will have more than three full weeks of training camp in Oxnard before breaking camp on Aug. 20. The team will fly from California to Shreveport, La., where the Cowboys will play the New Orleans Saints for their second preseason game on Monday, Aug. 21, on ESPN.
That will be considered the Cowboys' second road game of the preseason after playing in Seattle on Aug. 12. Following the game in Shreveport, the Cowboys will play their final two preseason games at Texas Stadium - against San Francisco (Aug. 26) and Minnesota (Aug. 31).
The Cowboys kick off the regular season on the road for the third consecutive year, this time in Jacksonville on Sept. 10.
But before the regular season, and even the preseason gets underway, the Cowboys must endure another intense training camp, which is expected to be as exciting as ever, especially with the recent signing of wide receiver Terrell Owens.
This will be the third and final year of training camp in Oxnard. The Cowboys announced they will return to San Antonio next year after signing a five-year agreement with Alamo City. The Cowboys held training camp in San Antonio in 2002 and 2003 before moving out to Oxnard the following summer.
In fact, the Cowboys actually spent two weeks of the 2001 training camp in Oxnard after opening camp in Wichita Falls for the first three weeks.
But with the five-year deal in place with San Antonio, this should be it, at least for a while, with the Cowboys training in Oxnard.
Crowder Out
Don't expect Cowboys wide receiver Tom Crowder to say his experience in NFL Europe this summer was an overall success.
In fact, Crowder probably won't be saying much of anything for a while.
Just when it appeared Crowder was turning the corner this season, playing for the Frankfurt Galaxy, he suffered a broken jaw in last Sunday's 17-12 loss to Amsterdam.
Crowder had just one catch for four yards in the game and suffered the injury on a fourth-quarter collision while playing special teams. He underwent surgery Sunday night and certainly will miss Frankfurt's season finale against Berlin on Saturday and a potential World Bowl game if Frankfurt qualifies.
Crowder will head to Birmingham, Ala., for treatment and rehab on the injury before returning to the Cowboys at Valley Ranch.
While he probably won't participate in the team's only mini-camp for veterans (June 2-4), he should be ready for the start of training camp.
Crowder got off to a slow start this spring, playing mostly on special teams. But in the last four games, Crowder became more of a factor on offense, catching six passes for 62 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown two weeks ago against Rhein.
Crowder has spent the last two years on the Cowboys' practice squad. The Cowboys like his track-quality speed and his potential as a special teams player. However, his transition to wide receiver hasn't been easy. And that, along with his jaw, took a big hit last weekend.
