Derrick Wimbush, a second-year backup fullback who was one of the top players on the Jacksonville Jaguars' special teams units as a rookie in 2005, will require surgery to repair a broken left arm that he suffered during a voluntary workout Thursday.

The surgery, expected to be performed within a week, likely will sideline Wimbush for the rest of the Jaguars' offseason program and for much of training camp.

Wimbush, 25, sustained the injury toward the end of Thursday;s workout. A trainer summoned by the player determined the break, and Wimbush's arm was placed in a cast.

The Fort Valley State (Ga.) product, a standout running back in college, earned a roster spot in Jacksonville as an undrafted college free agent last summer. Wimbush played sparingly from scrimmage, logging only three carries for 12 yards and one touchdown and catching five passes for 26 yards.

But he averaged 24.5 yards on 39 kickoff returns, the 10th-best mark in the league. And he had a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals on Nov. 27, one of only a dozen touchdowns scored on kickoff runbacks in the league in 2005. Wimbush's 955 yards on kickoff returns set a franchise record.

In addition, Wimbush recorded a team-best 18 special teams tackles and had a blocked kick.
