Cowboys Notebook: Backup QB Romo to get plenty of snaps

San Antonio Express-News
Backup quarterback Tony Romo can expect to see plenty of action in the preseason, coach Bill Parcells said Monday.

"I've got to decide where he is," Parcells said. "Our plans are to play him a lot. I think he's ready to play a lot."
Romo, a third-year player, has yet to attempt a pass in a regular-season game.
"I've been around him for three years now and I see a guy that's pretty smart," Parcells said. "In practice, he's making less and less mistakes."
Romo said he's ready for the opportunity.
"It's nice to hear those things, but I have to go out and prove it," Romo said.
Rookie impresses: Parcells praised rookie defensive back Patrick Watkins after watching him intercept a pass in Monday's morning practice.
"He has a real good chance to be a real good player," Parcells said. "It's early, but we're encouraged by what we're seeing."
Parcells dismissed concerns that the 6-foot-5 Florida State alum might be too slender for the NFL.
"He looks a little slender and he is, but he's 211 or 212 pounds," Parcells said. "With pretty good nutrition and some weight training, he'll be in the 220s pretty quickly. How much bigger you'd want him, I don't know. I certainly don't want his speed or quickness to diminish."
Watkins, a fifth-round pick, is competing with Keith Davis and Marcus Coleman at free safety. He's also taken some turns at cornerback.
New foot in town: Parcells said kicker/punter Tyler Fredrickson, who was signed Monday, will share punting duties with Mat McBriar during camp.
"I don't want to over-kick this guy (McBriar)," Parcells said. "He won't be able to punt."
In other roster moves, the Cowboys cut cornerback Byron Parker, linebacker J.J. Horne and receiver Ahmad Merritt. They also placed tight end Brett Pierce (knee) on the waived/injured list.
The moves leave the team with 82 players.
