OXNARD, Calif. – Greg Ellis isn't sure how this outside linebacker thing is going to work out, but he had a solid debut in the intrasquad scrimmage.
On the second play, Ellis bulled his way past right tackle Marc Colombo and sacked Drew Bledsoe. He added a pass deflection and a quarterback hurry, but he still sees the flaws in his game since the position switch.
"I think Bill [Parcells and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer] really want to see how I play and want to see what I can do out there," Ellis said. "I don't know if I'm first-team, second-team or third-team right now. I think, for me, they just want to see if I can handle the position."
Carpenter displays versatility: Bobby Carpenter's versatility could pay off. The first-round pick out of Ohio State is mostly an outside linebacker, but during the scrimmage, he played inside linebacker.
Carpenter had two sacks in a three-play span against the first-team offense.
"I didn't play in our bowl game, so my last game was in the middle of November," Carpenter said. "It was fun to be out there again. You don't mind practicing, but you crave for live action."
Parcells lays down the law: Many players had family in town for today's off-day, but Parcells reminded players to stay out of trouble. Two years ago he had safety Keith Davis, who had been shot before training camp in 2003, show teammates his bullet wounds.
"He definitely reminds us not to go out and what the consequences are," tight end Jason Witten said. "I think he's mentioned it to us six or seven times since we've been here."
Carpenter said he was going to the beach today because he has never seen the Pacific Ocean.
Briefly: Parcells said he expects safety Justin Beriault and guard Stephen Peterman (ankle) to practice Monday. Beriault did some light training during practice for the first time since suffering a concussion. ... Desperados lineman Terrance Dotsy was at practice.
