Weak Tuna?
by the Boston Herald:
It’s interesting to note how neutered Bill Parcells has become in Dallas on the personnel front. Hard to believe it’s the same guy who left New England because he couldn’t “shop for the groceries” and who forced Belichick out of the Jets organization by demanding to stay on an extra year as the team’s top decision-maker.
Now Parcells is subject to the whims of owner/general manager Jerry Jones, who has saddled him with two of the biggest headaches in the NFL: Terrell Owens and Mike Vanderjagt. The Owens situation has become farcical, between the receiver’s tender hamstrings (remember Terry Glenn in 1996?) and his Tour de France outfits on the stationary bikes.
According to a story on SI.com that Parcells later denied, the Tuna approached Cowboys trainer Jim Maurer on Tuesday and told him, “Look, you tell Terrell that tomorrow I want him out here for practice. Tomorrow’s the day. I don’t care. Tomorrow’s the day.”
When Owens did, in fact, don the pads for the first time in 14 practices Wednesday, many thought Parcells had laid down the law and won.
Unfortunately for Parcells, a more likely scenario involved the publicity-mad Owens knowing he’d have to return to practice at some point last week if he wanted to dress in the Cowboys’ nationallytelevised preseason game tomorrow night at New Orleans.
Parcells, though, dashed those hopes yesterday, saying Owens won’t play against the Saints despite practicing for a fifth straight time.
