Novacek Picks Dallas

The Cowboys’ identity, at least to the media and fans, is summed up in two words: Terrell Owens.

And if Owens is healthy and plays well, he will make a major impact on this team. He’s such a talented player, and his presence in the lineup can free up so many other things: If Owens is playing, teams can’t double-team Terry Glenn, can’t focus on the rushing game and can’t come after Drew Bledsoe. Plus, the Dallas defense will be more rested if it isn’t on the field as much.

I’d like to see Owens have a good season and be a normal player. He’s such a talented player, and it would be great to see him succeed by doing it the right way. That would give everyone else a sign that they don’t have to be a loudmouth to be a success.

Even if Owens isn’t healthy or struggles, the Cowboys offense should be good. They’ve shown in the exhibition season that they can score, and Bledsoe and Glenn seem to work well together.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars have a lot of question marks. They have been characterized by tough defense in the past, and they should be decent again, but how much can the offense score? Byron Leftwich needs to establish a rapport with his receivers – I’m not sure he’s found anyone to replace Jimmy Smith as a go-to receiver.

These are the games the Cowboys need to win.
