Dallas owner Jerry Jones couldn’t help but smile late Thursday night when talking about the amazing start to Tony Romo’s career as the Cowboys' quarterback. Romo passed for five touchdowns in Texas Stadium, something Roger Staubach had never done. Troy Aikman did it once, but never before the hometown fans.
“I know that Bill (Parcells) thought there was a really good chance that Tony would be a player,” Jones said, “but he has exceeded, so far, our expectations. I will say this about Tony. He always believed he could play if given the opportunity. But he respected Drew Bledsoe and would never have done anything to jeopardize that relationship. I’m not saying he was satisfied being a backup, but he’s always put the team first.”
Romo may or may not have a pratfall this season. He seems to be operating the offense to perfection while not playing favorites in the passing game. Whoever is open, Romo is going there with the football. Romo is 4-1 as a starter, but he should be 5-0 because the ‘Boys really messed up the Washington game.
“Tony told me he really likes the talent on our team and that we have a very good future,” Jones said. “I’m going to take his word for it.”
