Packers claim Holiday: Wide receiver Carlyle Holiday, a former Roosevelt star, was claimed off waivers by Green Bay from Arizona. The 6-foot-2, 217-pound Holiday has spent parts of two seasons on the Cardinals' practice squad after being signed as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame.

Saints' Thomas suspended: New Orleans defensive tackle Hollis Thomas was suspended for the rest of the regular season for violating the league's steroid policy.

Thomas, backed by the team, appealed the suspension, which he said was caused by using asthma medication. He uses an inhaler daily, and it apparently contained a banned steroid.

He has 43 tackles and four sacks for the Saints.

Portis has surgery: Redskins running back Clinton Portis had shoulder surgery that will require six months of rehabilitation.

Portis was placed on injured reserve Nov. 15 after breaking a bone in his hand, but his left shoulder also had been a problem all season. The surgery repaired a torn labrum and stabilized the shoulder.

Ward, Polamalu out: Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward and safety Troy Polamalu each will miss a second consecutive game because of knee injuries.

Receiver Cedrick Wilson (ankle) and safety Ryan Clark (groin) also won't play Thursday against Cleveland.

49ers cut Parrish: San Francisco waived safety Tony Parrish to make room for veteran linebacker Jay Foreman, who was signed to fill in while starting linebacker Derek Smith is out with a hamstring injury.

Bills put Crowell on IR: Buffalo placed linebacker Angelo Crowell on injured reserve and signed linebacker Roy Manning.

Pacman's hearing set: A judge set a Feb. 1 hearing for Tennessee cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones on a misdemeanor charge of assault filed by a woman who said he spit on her at a nightclub.

Jones' attorney hoped to settle the case by Tuesday's appearance before Judge John Holt and was in talks with the district attorney's office.

But Krystal Webb, the Tennessee State student who filed the charge over the October incident, has hired her own attorney.

Game time changes: The starting time for Miami's game at Buffalo on Dec. 17 has been moved to 3:05 p.m.

Also moved, from noon to 3:15 p.m., was Philadelphia at the New York Giants.
