Cowboys don't look ready for prime time

Terry Bradshaw / FOXSports.com

The Cowboys lost again and it wasn't pretty.

It was their third straight loss at Texas Stadium and it could have been worse considering how many times Tony Romo fumbled the ball (four times) and the fact that they can't seem to be able to cover anyone on pass defense.

Right now, the Cowboys can't play man-to-man; they can't play zone. I mean, they have to start blitzing more. They better get in Matt Hasselbeck's face next Saturday in the NFC wild-card game or their season could be over pretty quickly. Hasselbeck could pick them apart.

It's so hard to tell. I mean, they tried to get in Jon Kitna's face a few times today and Kitna got away from it because Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz is a really good offensive coach in teaching a quarterback what to do against the blitz. Martz did a great job of coaching Kitna up this season. And just look at the results, he passed for over 4,200 yards this season.

Look at what Kitna was able to do against the Cowboys with Roy Williams and Mike Furrey, a former safety, as his top receivers. Just imagine if Kitna a top running back in his backfield in this game, the damage that could have done.

Martz did make the Cowboys look bad. He's a pretty smart sucker. He can scheme a defense pretty good, pretty much like what Saints coach Sean Payton did against the Cowboys, too.

As bad as the Dallas defense was, the Dallas offense responded pretty well.

Romo still put 31 points on the board and finished the game a yard short of potentially tying the game and sending it into overtime.

But the bottom line is that Dallas is 9-7 and absolutely no momentum going into the playoffs. They had control of the NFC East at one time and lost control of that. There has to be some concern with how this season is ending up. At one point, more than a month ago, we were putting half of these guys in the Hall of Fame.

But how could I possibly have any answers to their woes if Bill Parcells can't figure them out. He can't seem to push the right buttons. Jimmy Johnson was telling me that Dallas played like they weren't convinced they could win, either.

Imagine that. We're talking about the Detroit Lions, one of the worst teams in the league. This win cost that franchise the No. 1 draft choice in 2007. I'm not in the tape room looking at the Cowboys. All I know is that Payton out-schemed them and Martz did the same thing.

I left the game really impressed with Kitna's season and the numbers he put up
