Ravens Special Teams Coach on our Fumble
Q: "In the Dallas game, the hold on a kick was bobbled and the ball subsequently turned over on a fumble. I was wondering if we could get a coach's perspective on what goes into deciding whether to kick on third down or run the extra play."
Special teams coordinator Frank Gansz, Jr.: "That's a time where you could have kicked it on third down. If it was a bad snap and he just fell on it, then they would have had another crack at the kick. A lot of that is situational. You have to ask yourself if you want to give them a chance to take more time off the clock. If they have a great returner, you don't want to kick it back down and give them a chance for a runback. Maybe your snapper isn't having a good day. Maybe you have a backup holder in there. Then, you have to evaluate that situation."
