CAP STATUS: The team is about $20 million under the salary cap, but it likely will be careful in the free-agent market after some recent ill-advised signings. It will look for a guard, safety and right tackle.
MOVING ON: The only starter the Cowboys risk losing is RT Marc Colombo, who lacks athleticism but works hard to make up for that. He is at the top of the team's priority list, but if he leaves, the Cowboys could turn to Luke Petitgout, who was released by the Giants. Another option would be to move LT Pat McQuistan to the other side to get him some experience in his second season. DE Kenyon Coleman is strong and is a good spot starter, but he didn't make enough plays to stay in the rotation and likely will leave as a free agent.
TARGETS: The team's biggest needs are at right guard and free safety. New coach Wade Phillips' connection to San Diego makes Chargers' G Kris Dielman a possibility. Dielman is not a great athlete, but he's a battler. The Cowboys will blitz a lot more next season, so a free safety who can help the rest of the secondary line up properly is necessary. Seattle's Ken Hamlin fits the bill. He would complement SS Roy Williams well and allow Williams to play closer to the line of scrimmage and be more disruptive. The Cowboys have depth at the position with second-year S Patrick Watkins and fifth-year S Keith Davis, but Davis is better suited to be a backup because of his special teams prowess.
