Sherman thinks he can relate to Owens

By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – One of the Cowboys' off-season goals was to find a position coach who could deal with wide receiver Terrell Owens, should they decide to keep him.
Enter new wide receivers coach Ray Sherman.

Sherman was an offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh and Minnesota, so he has experience in dealing with different situations and players, such as the temperamental Randy Moss when both were with the Vikings.

Last season, Owens had numerous problems with passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach Todd Haley.

"I think it's just how you approach guys and how you talk to them," Sherman said of Owens. "Basically, you just work with them. That's the thing I'm going to do, and I've done it all my life. I want to work with him and spend time with him and encourage him and let everything else take care of itself."

When Haley left Dallas to become offensive coordinator in Arizona, the Cowboys turned their attention to George Stewart, who coached Owens in San Francisco. But the Vikings hired Stewart as receivers coach.

So the Cowboys hired Sherman, who has 19 seasons of NFL coaching experience. Sherman was Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn's position coach in Green Bay.
Stewart finally on board: The Cowboys named Brian Stewart defensive coordinator Thursday.

Stewart has ties to several Cowboys coaches. When Paul Pasqualoni was head coach at Syracuse, Stewart was the secondary coach. With the San Diego Chargers, Stewart was defensive coordinator Wade Phillips' secondary coach. Stewart also is close to Cowboys secondary coach Todd Bowles.

"Wade was in San Diego a month before I was hired," Stewart said. "We were there before our families were there, and we had dinner together and we talked philosophy and just became close."

Briefly: Owens underwent successful surgery to reattach the tendon on his right ring finger Thursday. No timetable has been set for his recovery. Before the surgery, Owens said he expected to be catching passes by the end of May.

Dallas tendered qualifying offers to restricted free agents – CB Nate Jones, CB Jacques Reeves and LB Ryan Fowler. Jones and Reeves are seventh-round tenders at $850,000. A team would have to give up a seventh-round pick to sign either player. Fowler gets a base salary of $850,000, but Dallas wouldn't receive any compensation should he sign elsewhere because he was undrafted.

WR Patrick Crayton received a second-round tender worth $1.3 million, which requires a team to give up a second-round pick to sign him.

Dallas elected not to offer a tender to TE Brett Pierce, making him a free agent. ... Besides the release of QB Drew Bledsoe, the Cowboys cut TE Ryan Hannam and guard E.J. Whitley.
