Plenty of Help in '08

The Cowboys didn't have any blatant needs heading into the draft. But they did have a concern at receiver -- not necessarily for this year but for the future.
There was no one in the draft, short of top receiver Calvin Johnson, who could have come in and supplanted starters Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn. But both will be 33 at the start of next season. There is no guarantee either or both will be back in 2008.
Add in the fact that third receiver Patrick Crayton will be an unrestricted free agent in 2008 and the Cowboys have a huge question about the future of the position.
That being said, they would have loved to address the position on some level in the 2007 draft. Because they are set for 2007 at the position they weren't going to force the issue.
They had already decided to take linebacker Anthony Spencer in the first round even with receivers Dwayne Jarrett, Dwayne Bowe and Robert Meachem still on the board.
And when it was their turn to pick in the second round -- before they eventually decided to trade out -- the receivers they would have taken were already gone.
The Cowboys did take Washington quarterback Isaiah Stanback in the fourth round with the intention of turning him into a receiver.
But that move should be viewed more as a project.
The good news for the Cowboys is that receivers are like two guards in the NBA -- they are plentiful.
There will be a number of them in next year's free agent crop. There will also be several in the 2008 draft.
It's also safe to say that either Glenn or Owens will be back in 2008 and the team will likely re-sign Crayton, making the problem not as acute as it appears.
