Time could be running out on Rivera

IRVING -- Guard Marco Rivera is still on the Cowboys roster, but the team is planning to play next season without him.

The Cowboys have replaced Rivera in the starting lineup with free agent Leonard Davis.

The only question now is how the team will part ways with the veteran, who is coming off his second back surgery in three years.

It's likely Rivera will retire, and the Cowboys want to give him an opportunity to work through his options. It's one reason the team has yet to make a move regarding his roster spot.

"Well, his situation is different than [Greg] Ellis in that he's had a major surgery and he's had one before," coach Wade Phillips said of Rivera.

"He's a lot further away from being well. That's the situation with him, more so than Ellis. [Ellis is] out there running every day. [Rivera has] not progressed to that. But I don't know. We're kind of hoping for the best right now and we'll go from there."

McQuistan to guard

Second-year offensive tackle Pat McQuistan has been moved to left guard.

McQuistan, a seventh-round pick in 2006, was considered a possible replacement for Flozell Adams at left tackle.

But the Cowboys selected two tackles in the 2007 draft and signed Leonard Davis in free agency. Davis will play right guard in 2007 but could be moved to left tackle in the future.

Local pair to try out

TCU safety Eric Buchanan and Tarleton State quarterback Richard Bartel will be given tryouts during the minicamp this weekend.
