UDFA Signings Show The BOYS Personnel/Scouts Are Back

The Cowboys drafts under Jerry Jones (w/o Johnson and Parcells) have been very bad. However the UDFAs scouted and signed by the Cowboys dating back to the Landry days have been Very Good (some years great).

Alonzo Coleman RB, James Battle RB/FB, Jasper Johnson S, Blair Phillips MLB, and Matt Moore QB have ability and the position they are trying to fill are not set in stone. At RB Tyson Thompson is coming of knee surgery, need to upgrade FB and have a change of pace big back, 4th Safety, and 3rd/PS QB are positions for competition. I would have like to see a NT/DT come in. However Free Agency is not over with the second NFL cuts to make draft signing/salary cap room starting today with Keyshawn Johnson.

However looking back at last year with Romo (sorry I forgot Tuna's QB), Hoyte, Miles Austin, Abram Elam, Sam Hurd, Tyson Thompson, Stephen Bowen all played a role for the Cowboys over the last 2 years. The Dallas Cowboys famed scouting Department is still back discovering players.

In the Cowboys of the 70's the department discovered Cornell Green, Cliff Harris, Benny Barnes, and Drew Pearson (remember there was 16 round drafts then). The 80's discovered Everson Walls, Mike Downs, Bill Bates, Mark Tuinei, and Nate Newton. The 90's discovered Jason Garrett (Jimmy Johnson really knew how to draft/evaluate players). The Millennium has brought in so far the players mentioned above.

If you remember another reason the 90's did not produce a number of productive free agents and drafts is the firing of John Wooten (player personnel/Director pro personnel 1975-1991) by Jerry "Dumbo Jocks and Socks" GM. Remember Wooten was one of the guest at the table with when the "get lost Jerry" Super Bowl toast was done. Then Jerry fired Johnson and hire lackey Larry Lacewell.

I am so glad that Tuna did get Jerry to commit to what looks like a true Personnel Director in Jeff Ireland. He might can't keep Jerry from doing some crazy picks (Stanback in the 4th, good player 3 rounds to high). However if you look at the free agent signings over the last 2 years it looks like the good old days of the 70's and 80's.

You really know you have a good Personnel/Scouting Department when you look at the list of UDFAs and say these guys have ability and can make a NFL roster. I really think the Cowboys are on the right track if Jerry doesn't train wreck it off the rail again.
