Cowboy NOTES

A liberal dose

Linebacker Kevin Burnett returned to practice Saturday, nearly one week after suffering a neck burner/concussion.

But that doesn't mean he will return to lobbying for playing time.

'I've been advised not to talk about playing time,' the third-year linebacker from Tennessee said.

The suggestion came from his agent. In the past, Burnett has been known to lobby to get on the field.

But Burnett knows that this is an important training camp and preseason for his career. A second-round pick in 2005, Burnett has made one notable play in his career with the Cowboys -- an interception return for a touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts last season.

In two seasons, he's played 29 games with no starts and registered two sacks.

Burnett is competing with Bobby Carpenter for playing time at inside linebacker behind Bradie James and Akin Ayodele.

But Burnett said for the first time as a Cowboy he is healthy. He's had major surgery on his knees twice.

Finally, a full line

The return of right tackle Marc Colombo to practice on Saturday afternoon gave the Cowboys their first look at what they hope is their starting offensive line for the regular season.

'It was four or five years of buildup,' Colombo said of the pain in his right knee that required minor surgery last month. 'To be able to play 100 percent and give this team everything I had, it was necessary.'

With a host of unproven prospects providing depth, the Cowboys are crossing their fingers that they will have the same luck this season they enjoyed last season when no starting offensive lineman missed a start.

Coach Wade Phillips does not think Colombo will play in Thursday's preseason opener against the Colts and that he plans to gradually ease him into practice.

Woodson's call

After listening to local sports talk radio hosts label his friend and former teammate a whiner, former Cowboys safety Darren Woodson decided to call Greg Ellis last week.

'I got tired of hearing people call Greg selfish or greedy; nothing could be further from the truth,' Woodson said in a telephone interview Saturday from Canton, Ohio, where he was attending Michael Irvin's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

'Greg has too many good years left to think about retiring. And I know what he was saying; he has given them everything he has and then some, and he wanted to be treated like that.... He is going to come back and be the Greg Ellis of old.'

Glenn's status unclear

Receiver Terry Glenn returned to San Antonio after having minor knee surgery. He's not expected to practice for a while, and there's a slight chance he might not play in the preseason.

Ball injures leg

Rookie seventh-round draft pick Alan Ball had to be helped off the field by two trainers after his leg bent awkwardly during a one-on-one drill in the morning practice. Wade Phillips said the injury isn't considered serious. Ball did not practice in the afternoon.
