Prediction: T.O. will catch Frank Clarke
Sean Salisbury is tired of talking T.O., but I never get sick of discussing the Cowboys' most polarizing player. T.O. put up pretty good numbers last season (85 catches, 1,180 yards and a league-high 13 TD catches), but he has no problem saying he fell far short of his potential during his injury-marred, controverisal first season in Dallas.
"It wasn’t my best," T.O. said after the last time he practiced. "I know I could do better. I’m looking for bigger or better things this year.
“I feel like whatever I do within the offense, the numbers will take care of itself. But, obviously, I feel like I have the talent to really eclipse some records."
Let's look at the Cowboys receiving records. I can't see T.O. catching 111 passes or gaining 1.603 yards -- Michael Irvin's team-record stats from 1995. T.O. has never come close to either of those numbers in his career.
But Frank Clarke's team record of 14 TD catches, set in 1962, is in serious danger. T.O. dropped at least two TDs last season, when he scored at least 13 touchdowns for the 13th time in his career.
You might think that Jason Witten's enhanced role will take TDs away from T.O., but I go the other way on that (and T.O. agrees). Make Witten a serious downfield threat, and it's suddenly a lot tougher for safeties to help on T.O.
