Cowboys Notes

A liberal dose
September 25, 2007

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips is tired of the media jabbing him about his nickname.

During his Monday news conference, Phillips showed a highly sensitive side addressing his dislike for media members poking fun at his nickname 'Mr. Fix-it.' He coined the moniker on himself before the season because of the job he had done in previous stops turning around bad defenses.

Phillips sounded hurt by the comments and didn't say where they were coming from.

'I did say Mr. Fix-it, but I am getting tired of people demeaning me about it,' Phillips said. 'I am just being honest about it. If it's ridicule, and it may be deserved, whatever. I don't appreciate it, I can tell you that. You can put that behind my name, but it's not going to be on my gravestone.'

Phillips also poked fun at media members that picked Chicago to win.

Later in the 26-minute briefing, Phillips gave himself another nickname in a sarcastic fashion.

'I think our staff has done a tremendous job,' Phillips said. 'I really don't do a whole lot except talk to you guys. Now I am going to be Mr. Don't-do-a-lot.'

Despite the perceived slights by the media, Phillips is taking no personal satisfaction in the Cowboys' 3-0 start.

'It's mostly for my players,' Phillips said. 'They've worked hard. They've done all the things we've asked.'

Jones suffers concussion

Running back Julius Jones said he is looking into trying a new helmet after suffering a second concussion in the first three games of the season.

Jones was not listed on the team's injury report Monday.

He said he suffered a slight concussion in the fourth quarter against the Bears. Jones said that is why he didn't return to the game.

On the second play of the fourth quarter, Jones gained 22 yards to the Bears' 4, where he collided with Brian Urlacher and Danieal Manning. He stayed on his knees for a few seconds, before Patrick Crayton walked over to try to help him to his feet. Two trainers came out to check on Jones and all three walked slowly to the sidelines. The play was nullified because of a holding penalty.

Jones, who finished with seven carries for 26 yards, said he will be fine.

Crayton hurting

Receiver Patrick Crayton was hurting Monday. Not because of his dislocated pinky finger, but because of his dropped touchdown in the second quarter.

'It's eating at me,' said Crayton, who is considered to have the best hands on the team. 'I was just celebrating too early.'

Crayton said the injured finger, which was taped and has stitches, was not a factor in the dropped pass.

Stopping Hester

The Cowboys bottled up Bears return specialist Devin Hester. He was held without a big return on kickoffs and punts. His longest kickoff return was 28 yards and he had two punt returns for 1 yard.

'Everybody wanted to go down and be the one to knock him out,' said Cowboys safety Patrick Watkins, who had two special teams tackles. 'We didn't give him the chance to do anything.'

Injury update

Cowboys safety Keith Davis, who forced a Devin Hester fumble on second-half kickoff return, suffered a strained right shoulder and isn't expected to practice Wednesday.

Cornerback Terence Newman made his first appearance of the season and played in nickel situations. Wade Phillips said Newman (torn plantar fascia in right heel) dealt with some pain and was rusty in zone coverage. Newman also requested to return punts, but Phillips decided against it with a big lead. Phillips said Newman should be able to return punts in the near future.

Briefly

Wade Phillips said he will talk with NFL vice president of officiating Mike Pereira about how the first half ended Sunday night against Chicago. Phillips thought the Cowboys should have been able to run one play after stopping the Bears on fourth down with a few seconds remaining.

Phillips refused to criticize left tackle Flozell Adams, who was flagged three times and gave up a sack against the Bears. When asked about Adams, he said the entire offensive line played well. When asked again about Adams, Phillips said 'What did it look like?'
