IRVING – For all the success the Cowboys' offense has had the first two weeks of the season, their work inside the 20 has been excellent.

Dallas leads the NFL in points inside the 20 with 47. The Cowboys have converted only 55.6 percent of their plays inside the 20 into touchdowns. But they have scored on every one of their nine possessions. Only Pittsburgh and Detroit (10 each) have had more chances inside the 20.

Quarterback Tony Romo said he didn't know his team leads the league in points scored inside the 20 but said good play-calling and execution have been the keys.

Coach Wade Phillips is pleased with the efforts of the offense near the end zone but would like to see more touchdowns. Against Miami, the Cowboys went 2-for-5 inside the 20.

"Well, we left some points out there [against Miami], but I don't know that you're going to score 50 points every week, or 45," Phillips said. "But Miami is pretty tough on defense. I think that will show throughout the year. Again, you look at one game, our game, and say, 'Wow, they're not that strong on defense.' But some of it had to do with us."

Communication is better on defense: Free safety Ken Hamlin and inside linebacker Bradie James said communication improved for the defense. In Week 1, the Cowboys allowed 438 offensive yards to the New York Giants. In Week 2, a victory over Miami, the Cowboys gave up 334 yards.

"That was the biggest thing, the communication," James said. "We had a lot of new guys playing for the first time. It's not even the adjustments, just knowing each other. After two games, we know what to expect now."

Cowboys pick Johnson's brain? The Cowboys play Tank Johnson's former team, the Chicago Bears, on Sunday night. Did the Cowboys ask him about the Bears offensive and defensive schemes?

"I'm a defensive lineman. How much do I really know?" Johnson said with a smile. "I wouldn't be very useful in that respect. They have a very good coaching staff, and they're going to be fine."

Briefly: CB Terence Newman (foot) and OLB Greg Ellis (heel) most likely will continue working on either individual or team drills this week in practice starting today. Neither has played this season.
