DMN Blog: Star No. 2 WR is luxury, not necessity
Superstar columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor writes that Jason Garrett's job is a whole lot tougher without Terry Glenn on the field.
That's certainly true, but it's been proven that this passing scheme doesn't need a second star receiver to produce. Just look at the 1990s Cowboys. As noted by Hall of Fame scribe Rick "Goose" Gosselin, Michael Irvin never played with a premier another receiver.
The Cowboys won their last Super Bowl with Kevin Williams as a No. 2 receiver. Patrick Crayton is at least his equal. Jason Witten fills the Jay Novacek role. Granted, Julius Jones plus Marion Barber does not equal Emmitt Smith, but the Cowboys ought to be able to run the ball well enough to force foes into some eight-man fronts.
Irvin had the best season of his career that year, catching 111 passes for 1,603 yards and 10 TDs. If T.O. produces a career year, the Cowboys are NFC contenders, with or without Glenn. It's Garrett's job to put T.O. in positions to do that.
