IRVING, Texas - Despite the sub-par performance by the Cowboys' defense against the Giants, the prolific 45-point exhibition on offense has given many players lofty hopes for the season.
"I feel like we can put 50 up, 45, 40 every week," said wide receiver Terrell Owens, who had two touchdown catches in the Cowboys' 45-35 season-opening win over the Giants. "I think that's just the nature of this offense. We've got good running backs, we have good receivers, we have a good quarterback, so the sky's the limit for this offense and for this team."
The Cowboys' 45 points matched last year's season high and was their highest total in an opener since 1971 - the year they won Super Bowl VI.
And if you're wondering, the most points scored by an NFL team over the course of the regular season belongs to the 1998 Minnesota Vikings, with 556 points. Wide receiver Patrick Crayton, who was bumped up to the No. 2 receiver spot in the absence of Terry Glenn, wants 557.
"I wasn't just saying something when I wanted to put up 557 for the season, so that's really a goal that I think I've kind of set," Crayton said. "I can't put it upon the offense myself, but I think everybody else agrees we have the potential to do that."
Breaking the record means scoring at least 34.8 points a game, a number the Cowboys surpassed against the Giants by more than 10.
If everything clicks with the Cowboys' offense, it's 45 down, 512 to go.
