RECAP: Jerry Jones Show

JJ: We kept the players we thought could play the best... that's why we kept Reeves, we expect Newman to play.. a lot of times, the decision you make at a position is not the one that influences you the most, sometimes it's more about who you're trying to keep away from other clubs. We kept the guys on D that performed best in preseason.

Q: Concerned with Newman's injury?

JJ: I don't know that it's a concern, I expect him to play.

Q: Will it be week to week?

JJ: I don't know, if he tears it, it won't be... it would be fine. So probably when he gets out and works on it, it will tear.

Q: Glenn's locker-room presence, experience, as a mentor...

JJ: You weigh all of that when you make a decision like that. You put the guys out there that give you the best chance.

Q: Tough decision cutting Matt Moore?

JJ: No, if we lost Brad and Tony, we'd have gone after a vet QB, so it wasn't as tough as it may look.

Q: What'd you see/like about your team in preseason?

JJ: Got a lot of work done.. lot of reps for guys who will play on Sundays. Work in San Antonio was great, work vs Denver was great... Tony Romo had a very good offseason. Glad to see Flo and Colombo get work in, Davis has looked good, I feel better about our OL than I did before TC/preseason. Lots of flexibility on D, lots of ways to get pressure on QB. We'll benefit in the secondary because we can break on the ball more.

Q: What's stood out most about Wade Phillips?

JJ: In the 6-7 months since he's been here, I like what he's about defensively. We'll benefit from that.. I like his style, he did a good job during TC w/ the players.. he's working very well w/ Garrett and Sparano.. so all of that is as I had hoped it would be. But it's only been 6-7 months, this weekend is the first real test.

Q: Wade Wilson's suspension?

JJ: Jason Garrett works very directly with Romo, Brad Johnson's a vet... we'll miss Wade. But I support him personally and on a team basis, and look forward to a long-term future with Wade Wilson. It was unfortunate.. a health decision on his part. I've been familiar w/ the details for weeks. He thought he was doing things the right way, prescribed properly. But it fell out of the guidelines, bad timing relative to the league. But he's 27 years without 1 blemish as a player/coach, that's a remarkable record.

Q: Was league's punishment fair?

JJ: Yes, "fair" is not the word... what it's trying to accomplish from a standpoint of decision-making is that everyone is accountable.. "fairness" to me is ambiguous in this case.

Q: Appeal it?

JJ: (lots of rambling, no appeal.. I think)

Q: Expectations for the team?

JJ: Very high expectations, very high.. they were high last year too. We're in better shape w/ quarterbacking, O-Line.. I like what our opportunities are there.. Garrett, Sparano.. we have a good chance to move the ball.. Wade Phillips will make a significant impact there because he's got a good feel for what it takes to move the ball.. for instance, the game @ Houston, if it was regular season, we'd have started throwing the ball much earlier. Wade's got a good feel for those sort of things. Defensively, we'll use the talent that we've got in its best way.

Q: Have you seen defensive improvement from where you were in December '06?

JJ: Yes, I have. I've seen our DL guys not have to stand there and take it all day.. they can be creative and be a part of making plays.. it's good mentally, it keeps them into it, makes them more excited. Better play with our LBs, better confidence w/ how we use our LBs.. and our secondary will benefit from this pressure. It was tough because LBs had to key off WRs instead of the QB.. that's a pretty big transition for them. Our CBs were playing the WR instead of the ball, there was blind faith that there would be pressure.

Q: Most experts say Eagles/Cowboys in the East, but you can't count anyone out can you?

JJ: Especially now, with the way our teams are put together.. no, you shouldn't look at people's expectations, so much will be played out on the field rather than on paper.
