What a day for McBriar

IRVING - Mat McBriar's performance Sunday was one of the best by a punter in club history. But then again, what else is new? This guy is simply the best in the league.

His gross average of 53.3 was the fourth best in club history. He holds the record of 56.8 (against Houston on Oct. 15, 2006). His 50.5 net average was the second-best in club history behind Rod Widby's 50.6 effort against New Orleans in 1968.

Here's a few other notes and observations from Sunday's game:

• With 24 points Sunday, the Cowboys have totaled 227 through the first seven games, the third-highest point total in that span in club history. The 1966 club scored 266. Two years later, the Cowboys scored 230.

• The defense held the Vikings to just 72 passing yards, the lowest total since Dallas gave up 66 yards against Cleveland on Sept. 19, 2004. Of course, a lot of that had to do with Tarvaris Jackson, who just might be the league's worst quarterback. Jackson completed just 6-of-19 for a 44.2 rating.

• With 96 rushing yards, Marion Barber has 1,669 for his career, a total that puts him ahead of Duane Thomas (1,596) for 14th on the club's all-time list. Barber's 1-yard TD run in the third quarter was the first rushing TD given up by the Vikings this season.

• Chris Canty's blocked field goal was the first of his career. The ball was recovered by Pat Watkins and returned 68 yards for a TD, marking the first blocked field goal for a score since Ron Fellows returned a field goal blocked by Ed Jones 62 yards for a touchdown against New Orleans in 1983. It was also the second-longest field goal return in club history behind Jerry Norton's 94-yard return at St. Louis in 1962.

• In his first start of the season, Greg Ellis notched two sacks, giving him 15 career multiple-sack games. The total gave him 61 for his career, moving him past Larry Cole (60) for the eighth most in club history.

• Terrell Owens' first-quarter TD reception ties him with Alvin Harper and Jason Witten (18) for 12th place in club record books. Owens finished the game with seven receptions for 103 yards. It marked his second 100-yard game of the season and the 41st of his career.

• With his 31 completions today, Tony Romo set a single-game career-high. He now has 370, passing Eddie LeBaron (359) for ninth place in team record books. Romo's 28 first-half completions were the most in the first half since 1991. Troy Aikman had 20 against Seattle in 1998. It's also the second most in the league since 1991. Only Rich Gannon (29 against Pittsburgh in 2002) has had more.

• With 277 passing yards today, Romo now has 4,887 for his career. His performance today allowed him to pass Drew Bledsoe (4,803) for the ninth most passing yards in club history.

• Jason Witten caught a career-high 10 passes today. It was the most receptions by a Dallas pass catcher since Richie Anderson had 10 catches at New Orleans (12/28/03). Witten’s 86 receiving yards brought his career total to 3,378. It moved him past Terry Glenn (3,337) for 11th place on the club’s all-time receiving yardage list.
