IRVING -- The Cowboys have until 3 p.m. Thursday to decide whether they will put the franchise tag on one of their free agents.
And while conventional wisdom has them contemplating putting a franchise tag on free agent tackle Flozell Adams, a source said if the team franchises anyone it would likely be free safety Ken Hamlin.
Hamlin gambled and signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract to join the Cowboys last year. He made the most of the situation with a career-high 102 tackles, five interceptions and 14 passes defensed while making the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career.
He is almost certainly looking for a long-term extension and a big-money free-agent contract. The Cowboys remain in talks with his agent, Kenard McGuire.
Economically speaking, the franchise tag makes sense for Hamlin as it would require the Cowboys to commit to a one-year, $4.3 million contract for next year if the two sides can’t agree on a long-term deal.
To franchise Adams, it would cost the Cowboys $9 million in 2008.
But while the Cowboys are unlikely to franchise Adams, they still remain in negotiations for a contract extension.
According to his agent Jordan Woy, the two sides remain in discussions regarding ideas and parameters for a deal, although he said it is still early in the process.
