The Denver Broncos released receiver Javon Walker on Friday, and the Cowboys have stepped up to the plate and expressed an immediate interest, according to numerous sources.
Walker was due the first in a series of bonuses totaling $5.4 million Monday, prompting Denver to cut him loose. The Cowboys are looking to add a receiver to a crew that includes All-Pro Terrell Owens, Terry Glenn and Patrick Crayton.
The team is uneasy about how Glenn will return from the two knee surgeries he underwent in 2007, and Walker wouldn't come without similar concerns. Knee surgery limited Walker to eight games last fall, two years after he tore his ACL and underwent reconstructive surgery in his final year as a Packer.
Broncos coach Mike Shanahan told Denver reporters that Walker might need microfracture surgery, but agent Kennard McGuire says his client is healthy. In Walker's last two healthy seasons, 2004 with the Packers and 2006 with the Broncos, he hit the 1,000-yard milestone in receiving yards.
The Cowboys are not in a rush to sign Walker and will gauge how to pay him before seriously pursuing him. Walker played for Cowboys receivers coach Ray Sherman in Green Bay, and Sherman helped Walker in a turbulent 2007 off-season that started with teammate and Fort Worth native Darrent Williams dying in his arms.
Hamlin doesn't mind tag: At the Mavericks game Friday night, franchised safety Ken Hamlin called getting the tag "part of the business."
"I'm waiting my turn," the Pro Bowler said. "There are some things that are going on, but we're going to see what happens. ... I want a long-term deal. I'm definitely looking forward to it. We'll see what happens."
Owens joined Hamlin at the game, and when asked if there was movement on a contract extension, he said, "It'd be news to me."
Adams contract details: The six-year deal Flozell Adams signed with the Cowboys will carry cap numbers of $3.6 million in 2008 and '09. Adams got $13 million to sign and guaranteed $1 million base salaries the next two years.
Adams will receive $22.5 million in the first three years of the deal, which is just below the $24 million Leonard Davis will get in the first three years of the contract he signed last year.
Glenn says no to surgery: Glenn had two surgeries on his right knee, forcing him to miss 15 regular-season games last year, and doctors told him he needs microfracture surgery in the near future but can continue to play without it. He has elected to forgo surgery and plans to play in '08.
"I'm excited about coming back, and I'm glad the team has the confidence in me to return," Glenn said. "I think we have a great team, and I want to be apart of it. I'm very thankful to be around great ownership."
Briefly: Unrestricted free agent CB Jacques Reeves will visit Houston, New Orleans, Kansas City and St. Louis. ... LB Zach Thomas' four-year contract can be voided after the 2008 season based on playing time. Thomas will get at least $2 million in signing bonus and base salary with the chance to earn another $1 million in incentives. The entire contract is worth nearly $19 million. Thomas' cap number for the 2008 season will be $1.25 million.
