The Cowboys and the NFL Draft

Dallas owns the 22nd and 28th first-round picks of the April 26-27 NFL Draft. A lot of speculation has swirled about Jerry Jones wanting a Hog - whether that means trading up for one or staying put.

Darren McFadden’s a great back. He’s not quite the back Adrian Peterson was coming out of college, although he does have better breakaway speed and isn’t as injury prone. McFadden wearing a star on the side of his helmet sounds very intriguing, especially when you pair him with Marion The Barbarian in the backfield.

However, I don’t think Dallas is in a position to give up what it would take to get in the top five and pick Run DMC. Dallas did go 13-3 last year, so it would appear the Cowboys just need a tweak here and a tweak there to win the Super Bowl.

Not the case.

Dallas has big needs in the secondary, the offensive line, and receiving corps. With Julius Jones’ departure, the Cowboys need a complementary back for Barber, too.

What should they do? Stay put and get the other Hog - Felix Jones.

Felix led NCAA Division I FBS in yards per carry with 8.7. He’s a breakaway speedster and has the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. It’s true that McFadden’s a little better, but when you’ve already got Marion Barber, there’s no need to mortgage a draft just to get McFadden when Felix Jones will likely be there at No. 22.

As for the 28th pick, I think Dallas should go DB. Wideout and offensive lineman are also possibilities. If Dallas trades for Pacman Jones, it won’t take a DB in the first round, so look for a DeSean Jackson (Cal), Limas Sweed (Texas), or Early Doucet (LSU) if the Cowboys go receiver.
