DMN Blog: Romo strives for Tiger Woods-like mental toughness

by Tim MacMahon

The golf world is ga-ga about Tiger Woods' physical toughness after he gutted it out on a bad knee to win U.S. Open. Of course, it takes a lot more than walking a course on a bum wheel to impress an NFL player.

But Tony Romo is in awe of Tiger's mental toughness, saying that Tiger is in a class of his own in that regard. Romo, who is 0-2 in the playoffs but has had spectacular performances in some high-pressure regular-season games, wants to emulate Woods' ability to perform in the clutch.

Is that sort of mental toughness something an athlete can develop? Romo believes so, as long as you're blessed a combo of guts and cool to begin with.

"For the most part, if you're going to be one of the strongest mentally, you either have it or don't have it," Romo said. "But I definitely think you can always work on it. Now, I don't know if you're ever going to get to Tiger Woods' level if you don't develop something at a younger age and have it, but it goes along with leadership and a lot of those areas."
