IRVING, Texas — Receivers Danny Amendola and Mike Jefferson were signed Sunday to the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad, and there is a chance that one or both of them will play in the season opener.
Also signed to the practice squad was former Oklahoma State fullback Julius Crosslin, as well as running back Alonzo Coleman, defensive end Marcus Dixon, linebacker Tearrius George and tight end Rodney Hannah.
Amendola, a rookie free agent from Texas Tech, and Jefferson, who was on the practice squad last season, were among 21 players the Cowboys cut Saturday to get to their 53-man roster.
Both players cleared waivers, along with five other players Dallas cut and brought back to the practice squad.
Dallas still has one spot left on its practice squad, which was likely kept open for another pending move.
The Cowboys have reached an agreement in principle to re-sign safety and special teams standout Keith Davis, who had signed a two-year free agent deal with Miami in March. But Davis was cut by the Dolphins before their final preseason game.
When the deal is completed with Davis, the Cowboys will have to clear a spot on their 53-man roster for him. And that will likely be somebody that Dallas will then try to put on the practice squad.
When Amendola and Jefferson were cut Saturday, that left Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton as the only healthy receivers on the roster
Receivers Sam Hurd (left ankle) and Miles Austin (sprained right knee) definitely won't play in the season opener Sunday at Cleveland, and might go longer without getting in a game. Isaiah Stanback (dislocated shoulder) hasn't been ruled out for the Browns game, but he didn't practice last week.
Rookie linebacker Erik Walden, a sixth-round pick from Middle Tennessee who was the only one of the Cowboys' draft picks in April that was cut, didn't clear waivers. He was claimed by Kansas City.
