DMN Burnett Blog: Talks Eagles Offense
by Kevin Burnett
I was a little too excited yesterday. Getting to play the Eagles and anyone for that matter is another challenge for this Dallas Cowboys football team. We look at every game as a one game season and every chance we get to go out and make an impact we want to do just that.
As a follow up to yesterday the Eagles offense has three elements. The quarterback the running back and the supporting cast. If you stop the quarterback from throwing down the field or running all over the place than you have a chance, you have eliminated one of their options. If you can hold Westbrook under 100 total yards then you have taken away more than 50% of their offense. Westbrook alone can account for 30- 40 touches per game when the Eagle offense has 70 plus snaps.
Now the problems begin when you let #36 get rolling this allows #5 to keep going to him as an option. When #5 has all of his weapons this Eagle offense can put points in hurry. This allows the Eagles coaching staff to open the play book and get everyone involved in the offense. If you start taking away options then you start to limit their offense because then you are asking guys to make more plays then they are accustom to making.
Not saying the supporting cast is not able to do so but this disrupts play calling. Instead of 36 getting ball on 2nd and 10 you have to think of another way to get the offense into a manageable 3rd down situation. #10 is still a rookie and by playing the percentages #82 will be taken away as well.
Meaning the defense will be in a call that forces the QB to throw quick or dump the ball off to the TE because everything else is covered. With being said and having played this team six times I know in this situation be all over the TE because he will be one of the QB's first reads. In 2nd and 10 plus you always have to be heads up for these three plays
1. Draw
2. Screen
3. Pocket movement (waggle, roll) or play action pass
These types of plays are safe options for the offense which have high success rates. When you know this as a defense you know what to take away especially if you have discounted their main players.
