DMN -Stadium Scoop: Dallas Cowboys begin big move to new stadium

JEFF MOSIER

ARLINGTON – The moving vans have been busy at the new Dallas Cowboys stadium, and soon they'll be backing up to Texas Stadium.

In the last week, about 80 employees have moved into offices at the new stadium in Arlington. That clears the way for demolition of some old buildings at the site that were used as construction offices.

Movers also have been scouring Texas Stadium in recent days to get a more precise estimate of what it'll take to vacate the Cowboys' home of more than 37 years. Everything from office furniture to washers and dryers to boxes of paperwork will be hauled from Irving to Arlington.

"There are literally thousands of items that need to be moved," said Jack Hill, the stadium construction manager. "We think that it'll be a monthlong process."

The Cowboys plan to be out of Texas Stadium in March.

Super Bowl offices

The officials running the Super Bowl XLV Host Committee also got a fresh start to the new year. The committee just opened offices in the Turtle Creek area of Dallas and the downtown Fort Worth Club. A third office will open later in Arlington at the new stadium.

Bill Lively, the committee's executive director, said that major announcements about the 2011 Super Bowl will be made in late February, but he declined to hint at what those might be.

Roadwork update

Val Lopez, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation, said that the $165 million road project near the stadium is still on schedule. Most but not all of the work will be completed for the Cowboys' first game in Arlington.

Here's what drivers on Interstate 30 can expect for the first game of next season: Westbound drivers will be able to exit Baird Farm Road and Center Street and go south, the direction of the stadium. Eastbound drivers will be able to go south on Center and Baird Farm and north and south on Collins Street.

The construction won't affect the other exits and routes to the stadium.

Most or all of the new frontage roads are expected to be finished by then. The project includes lowering I-30, adding HOV lanes, adding bridges at Baird Farm and Center, rebuilding the bridge at Collins and adding frontage roads.

This work was already planned before the Cowboys stadium was announced, but its schedule was accelerated to help with traffic. State transportation officials have said for years that the work couldn't be finished in time for the opening of the stadium.

The projected completion date is late 2010 or early 2011.
