Cowboys have named new stadium, but it's still a secret

ARLINGTON – The Dallas Cowboys have decided on a name for the team’s new stadium, but that’s being kept secret for now.

Officials however are willing to concede that they won’t have a corporate naming rights sponsor in time for the June 6 grand opening concert featuring George Strait. A month ago, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said he wouldn’t speculate about whether a naming rights deal would be secured by the stadium’s opening. On Thursday, the uncertainty was gone.

"There will be a [sponsored] name on it at some point," he said at a press conference at the stadium Thursday previewing the NFL draft and a new radio partner for the team. "We certainly want everyone to be aware of that. But not initially."

Cowboys executives have said previously that a non-sponsored name might be fairly similar to the current working name of Dallas Cowboys New Stadium. Something that simple and self-explanatory would fit in with its neighbor. The Texas Rangers’ stadium started out as The Ballpark in Arlington and now is called Rangers Ballpark in Arlington after a short stint with corporate sponsor Ameriquest from May 14, 2004 to March 18, 2007.

Jones also said there are still discussions about booking an AC/DC concert at the stadium, but it is not a done deal. The other rumored concerts, including Strait and U2, were eventually booked at the stadium.
