NFL Prediction: 2009 Dallas Cowboys
By George N Root III
America loves the Dallas Cowboys. Well, at least the American media loves the Dallas Cowboys. It boggles the mind how a team that consistently under-achieves is always given the benefit of the doubt by the football "experts" on television. The Dallas Cowboys missed the NFL playoffs in 2008, and there is a very good chance that the city of Dallas will get a repeat performance in 2009.
On offense, any team with designs of making the NFL playoffs and doing well needs to have their three specialty positions solidified. In Dallas there is Marion Barber at running back along with now second-year player Felix Jones. These two could prove to be one of the best running back tandems in the NFL in 2009. Barber is a beast with the football, and Jones showed signs of promise in his rushes last season.
Under center they still have Tony Romo. Romo has got to be the most celebrated mediocre quarterback in the NFL today. He is the face of the franchise, and he is eating up the instant celebrity that comes with being the Dallas Cowboys quarterback. But Romo has never performed in the clutch, and he is still looking for his first playoff win. With the departure of Terrell Owens, Romo now has to rely on the unpredictable talents of wide receiver Roy Williams.
Roy Williams is not faring well under the NFL spotlight in Dallas. He has made statements that the media has made him a target, and he feels that he is already being blamed for the potentially horrible season the Cowboys are looking at for 2009. After Williams there is solid receiver Patrick Crayton there to pick up the slack. Once you get to number three on the wide receiver depth chart for the Dallas Cowboys you start to realize just how long the season is going to be in Dallas in 2009.
On defense the Dallas Cowboys will be the solid defensive unit they have always been. With the additions of Igor Olshansky and Keith Brooking, the Cowboys have definitely upgraded their defense beyond the stellar level that it was at last season. But without an offense to put points on the board, that top notch defense is in for a long season. The Cowboys are in the toughest division in football, and it is going to take more than just a pretty face at quarterback to help them make the NFL playoffs and content for the Super Bowl.
2009 NFL Record Prediction: 7 and 9
Finish: Last in the division and out of the playoffs
