DMN Blog: DeMarcus Ware doesn't have a new contract, but he has a guarantee

By Tim MacMahon/Blogger

DeMarcus Ware didn't want to discuss his contract negotiations with the Cowboys during his appearance on 1310 The Ticket this morning.

"I'm getting ready for the season," Ware said when host Norm Hitzges broached the subject. "I'm going to do whatever I can to help the team out. Nothing that's going to stop me from doing what I do best, and that's rush the passer and play well."

So there you have it. Just in case there was any doubt, Ware won't be a holdout. He'll play as hard as he has while developing into arguably the most dominant defensive player in the game. How's that for a guarantee?

The Cowboys made it clear this winter that signing Ware to a long-term extension was their top off-season priority. Danny Snyder didn't do Jerry Jones any favors when the Redskins signed DT Albert Haynesworth to a record-breaking deal (seven years, $100 million, $41 million guaranteed), but it's still a decent bet that Ware and the Cowboys get a deal done at some point in the next month.

If that doesn't happen, Ware doesn't sound too worried.

"There's not a deadline at all," Ware said. "But at the end of the day, I've got one more year, so it's got to be done in a year. Right?"

Well, not necessarily. The Cowboys technically could put the franchise tag on Ware next year, but it's unlikely that it would come to that. But Ware definitely doesn't seem himself leaving Valley Ranch.

"I picture myself a lifetime Cowboy," Ware said. "Yes, I do."

As does Jerry, so it's just a matter of time before the deal gets done.
