Sunday's Dallas Cowboys Alumni Association Gala will be missing a recognizable face. WFAA-TV Channel 8 reported Wednesday that legendary former Cowboys quarterback Don Meredith recently suffered a stroke and is recovering at his home near Santa Fe, N.M.
The station reported that Meredith, 67, who rarely makes public appearances, planned to attend, but that doctors have told him not to fly because of his condition.
"I thought Don was going to be there," said his former teammate, Rayfield Wright, when reached late Wednesday evening. "I had no idea this had happened."
Former Cowboys cornerback Mel Renfro, who has spearheaded Sunday's reunion, did not return several phone calls late Wednesday. He told The News in early February that Meredith had committed to the event.
Meredith went to two Pro Bowls from 1960-68. After retiring, he became a colorful analyst on ABC's Monday Night Football.
