NFC East: Eagles Have Bad First Day of Free Agency

Free agency seemed to go through one delay after another and now, the Eagles are delayed in their charge to sign free agents. Five of the free agents that the Eagles had as definite targets signed elsewhere on Saturday, the first day that players could sign free agent deals.
The Cleveland Browns aren't exactly friends of the Eagles at this point. They snagged both top target LeCharles Bentley and wide receiver Joe Jurevicius, who the Eagles had shown interest in. Bentley signed with Cleveland to return home. Being from the Cleveland area and playing at Ohio State, Bentley admitted Saturday that while there were plenty of rumors, his attention was turned solely toward the Browns.
The birds lost a couple of potential defensive tackle signings in Kendrick Clancy and Ma'ake Kemoeatu. Clancy leaves the Giants to play in Arizona, while Kemoeatu signed with Carolina after a stint in Baltimore. The Ravens also lost running back Chester Taylor, another potential target of the Eagles.
While the Eagles had interest in all of those players as free agents, Bentley's signing stings the worst. It's possible that the Eagles will now turn to Kevin Mawae, the former New York Jets center, who was cut loose by the Jets prior to the free agency period. Mawae has reportedly visited the New England Patriots, who may be looking for help at center with starter Dan Koppen injured. Even without signing a center, the Eagles have veteran Hank Fraley and newcomer Jamaal Jackson in the mix for the position.
Jeff Garcia, who was also expected to sign early on with the Eagles, didn't sign with the team on Saturday, but also didn't sign anywhere else. The Eagles are still interested in bringing Garcia to town as a back up to Donovan McNabb.
