While Lakewood's Thomas Carroll, the former University of Miami defensive end, and record-setting Monmouth University wide receiver Austin Miles failed to hear their names called at the NFL draft, the telephones started ringing as the final round drew to a close on Sunday afternoon.
Carroll, who finished with 14 1/2 career sacks, will sign a free-agent contract with the Giants, while Austin, who had 150 catches and 33 TDs for the Hawks, landed with the Dallas Cowboys.
The Giants reached out to Carroll with about 20 picks remaining, indicating that if he was not selected they wanted to give him a chance to make the team this summer in training camp at the University at Albany. When the draft ended, it was defensive line coach Mike Waufle who called to seal the deal.
"They told me they want me to put pressure on the quarterback," Carroll said. "I was just praying for the best situation, hoping it would work out and it did. I think I have a great chance to make the team."
At 6-4, 240, Carroll is undersized by NFL standards, but could certainly help immediately on special teams and as a situational pass rusher. The Giants used their first-round pick on Boston College defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka.
As the draft was coming to a close, teams were scrambling to sign Austin, who, at 6-2, 215, impressed scouts at the combine in February. But it was a call from Cowboys coach Bill Parcells that convinced him the Cowboys were the right fit.
"(Parcells) told me they were looking for hard working guys, and that's what I've always been," said Austin, who watched the draft from his family's home in Garfield.
"I'll have to make the team on special teams, but at wide receiver they only have one guy coming back in Terry Glenn. They picked up Terrell Owens, but he's replacing Keyshawn Johnson, so they do have need there." The Cowboys drafted one receiver, selecting LSU's Skyler Green in the fourth round.
