Cowboys stadium starting to take shape

ARLINGTON - Behind the mound of dirt off Randol Mill Road and Collins Street, the new Dallas Cowboys stadium is starting to take shape.

So far, excavation equipment has dug 20 feet down to begin creating the bowl of the stadium in Arlington. The crews have 30 feet to go before they reach the level where the football field will be, said construction manager Jack Hill.

Meanwhile, five feet at a time, workers build a concrete retaining wall to keep the dirt from falling back into the bowl.

About 40 trucks, making 600 trips a day, haul hundreds of cubic yards of dirt off the site to other construction projects around the Metroplex, including the extension of Texas 360 in south Arlington, Hill said.

As work continues on the bowl, six large tower construction cranes will be erected next month to help move building materials around the stadium.

Design plans for the stadium have not been unveiled, but Hill said they will be released at the end of July when most of the work on the stadium is put out for bids. The stadium is expected to be open for the 2009 football season.

Each truck is filled with dirt in 45 seconds, with two scoops of dirt from excavators.

420,000 cubic yards of dirt has been moved, about one-fourth of the eventual total.

Six large construction cranes will be put up in July.

200 people work Monday through Friday, plus a half-day on Saturdays.

15,000 tons of structural steel was bought for the stadium two months ago.

190,000 cubic yards of concrete was bought one month ago.
