JJT: Jones needs to take next step
Julius Jones has proven he can run away from NFL defenders.
This is the year we find out about Julius Jones. This is the year we find out whether he's going to elevate himself to one of the premier running backs in the league or if he's going to continue to tease.
As usual, his off-season workouts have been superb. As usual, he's in great shape. As usual, the Cowboys expect big things from him.
Now, the question is whether he can deliver.
He has the talent. There's no question about that. In fact, four games of more than 149 yards rushing in 21 starts gives credence to his ability.
But he has yet to put together a full season of dominance. There have been flashes that demonstrate what he's capable of doing, but long sustained moments of brilliance don't exist.
As a rookie, he broke his shoulder blade. Last year, a high ankle sprain wrecked his season.
This is not to suggest he's soft or injury prone. But the NFL is a results-oriented business. The bottom line is all that matters.
For now, his bottom line reads: potential. At the end of the season, the Cowboys hope it reads: star.
