IRVING – The Cowboys reached an agreement with their second draft pick Wednesday, coming to terms with fifth-rounder Pat Watkins on a four-year contract, according to agent Jerrold Colton.
Watkins, the 138th overall pick, is expected to compete for the free safety job and also be a contributor on special teams. Watkins will receive base salaries of $275,000 (2006), $360,000 (2007), $445,000 (2008) and $530,000 (2009).
Watkins, 6-4, 211 pounds, started 23 of his 49 games at Florida State with 205 tackles and 33 pass deflections. He finished with 10 interceptions, good for 15th best in school history.
Seventh-round pick Pat McQuistan agreed to a four-year deal Monday. The Cowboys have five draft picks left to sign before training camp begins. The team leaves for Oxnard, Calif., on Thursday but is hopeful of getting all of the deals in place on time.
The Cowboys first practice is Saturday.
