In 63 games with the Eagles, Mitchell has 90 career catches for 1,263 yards and five touchdowns.

OXNARD, Calif. - Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells has expressed concern over the depth of his receiving corps. And the latest hamstring injury to Terrell Owens certainly doesn't help.

So maybe that's why the Cowboys worked out former Eagles receiver Freddie Mitchell on Sunday, taking a free look at a veteran with experience.

Mitchell (6-0, 195) did not play last season after four years in Philadelphia. The former first-round pick (25th overall in 2001) played one season alongside Owens in 2004. Mitchell filled in nicely for Owens, who suffered an ankle injury at the end of the season that forced him out of four games, including two in the playoffs.

The Eagles released Mitchell in May 2005. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs but was released in September 2005.

Mitchell, who played his college ball at nearby UCLA, never lived up to first-round expectations, catching 90 passes in four years. His best season came in 2003 when he recorded career-highs in catches (35), receiving yards (498) and touchdowns (two).

But the Cowboys aren't looking for a starting-quality receiver, especially if Owens and Terry Glenn stay healthy. Owens has missed the last three days of practice, including Saturday's controlled scrimmage because of a sore hamstring. MRI results from Saturday were negative, though Owens said he will not rush his return.

But regardless of Owens' injury, there are some depth concerns behind the starters. Patrick Crayton and Terrance Copper have been inconsistent here in the first week of training camp practice. Crayton caught 22 passes last season, but just four in the last month of the season after returning from an ankle injury. Copper has just eight career catches in two seasons.

The Cowboys have a group of young, inexperienced players behind Copper and Crayton, including Jamaica Rector, J.R. Tolver and rookie free agents Sam Hurd and Miles Austin.

Oh god say it ain't so
