DCFanatic Pre-Game Report - Cowboys vs 49ers

August 25, 2006 ---

Does Alex Smith Have Any Shot In This Game?

The Cowboys defense is coming into this game after two stellar performances so far in the preseason. The 49ers are sending out a young quarterback in Alex Smith who has shown the world he is not quite ready to be an NFL quarterback. I smell disaster for the 49ers offense from the get go in this one. The 49ers have some weapons on offense in former Cowboy Antonio Bryant and rookie Tight End Vernon Davis, but their offensive line will need to provide Smith enough time to find these guys. I don't see that hapening at all. Look for Demarcus Ware and Greg Ellis to shine in this game and poor Alex Smith to be picking himself up off the turf more than a few times.

No T.O., Will It Be The Terry Glenn Show Once Again?

Not this week. I have a feeling the Cowboys are going to want to get Jason Witten going early in this game. He has had a very quiet preseason so far and it's about time he get more than one or two passes going his way. He is a mismatch for the 49ers linebackers so the Cowboys will probably use some play action to set him up down the field for a few long strikes. Let's hope Witten comes out of this game looking like he is in midseason form.

Sam Hurd Can Seal The Deal With A Few Good Grabs

Coach Parcells has been saying very good things about Sam Hurd all preseason, but he won't say the kid definitely has a roster spot locked up just yet. That story may change by late Saturday evening if Hurd can just make sure he catches every pass that comes his way against the 49ers. There is a log jam right now in the battle for the 4th and 5th Wide Receiver positions on this roster, but Hurd is the front runner for one of them. Good luck Sam.

Fabini vs Colombo: The Right Tackle Drama Continues

No one can figure out right now who is going to be the Right Tackle on opening day. I think this includes the Cowboys coaching staff which is a bad thing. With Rob Petitti now playing Left Tackle it would seem he is destined to be the swing tackle. Fabini and Colombo got all the playing time at Right Tackle last week and they will also get all the time this week. So it would seem one of them will be the starter on opening day, but who knows for sure. The key question is, How many Tackles are the Cowboys keeping on the roster? I just hope that after this game some of these questions surrounding the position will be answered.

Is Pat Watkins Going To Start At Free Safety Again?

When the Cowboys came out on defense last week and Pat Watkins was running with the first team defense a lot of us were shocked and happy. This kid has really come a long way since being drafted in the fifth round last April. With his size and athletic ability he may be the ball hawking Free Safety this defense has been looking for since Darren Woodson retired. Watkins did not get much of an opportunity last week because the game was such a mismatch, but let's hope he can come up with a big play or two this week on defense.

Julius Jones Could Use A Big Game Here

As the weeks go on here this summer there is less and less talk about Julius Jones and his potential to be a Super Star in the NFL. He needs to really come out and find a groove running the football this week. I know the offensive line also needs to help him out, but making a few big plays on his own should be expected if he wants to be known as an elite running back on this level. If Coach Parcells gives him the entire first half to show and prove I hope he can provide the offense with a spark one way or another. Jones still has a lot of people in his corner at this point, but there is always room for more supporters.

Here's A Bunch Of Stuff I Hope To See...

Greg Ellis and Demarcus Ware making an Alex Smith sandwich at the very beginning of this game, Skyler Green bring one back for a Touchdown to save his spot on this roster, Drew Bledsoe as the starting quarterback so the media has no wood for the fire, Julius Jones go over 100 yards in the first half, Jason Witten with a 40+ yard reception for a TD, the defense force at least 3 turnovers, Mike Vanderjagt kicking Field Goals, Tony Romo not wearing any gloves, Andre Gurode lock up the Center job with a good performance, Bobby Carpenter getting a big hit on Frank Gore, Roy Williams laying out Antonio Bryant and lastly...
