Dropped passes could cost Hurd roster spot

After doing just about everything right in practice the past two weeks, Sam Hurd dropped the ball - literally - in the Cowboys' preseason opener Saturday at Seattle.
"He's very aggressive, knows his position and a couple of other positions and has very good stamina," Parcells said of the former Brackenridge standout. "But in the game, he dropped two out of six passes. You have to catch the ball more consistently if you are going to be in the mix (for a roster spot)."
Parcells said Hurd, who had four receptions for 40 yards against the Seahawks, still hasn't learned the proper technique for catching the ball.
"He has done a pretty good job in practice, but he doesn't put his hands together properly when trying to catch the ball," Parcells said. "He does it properly in practice, but he reverted back (to doing it wrong) in the game. It's a flaw and he needs to learn how to correct it."
Parcells wants Hurd to make the team. That was apparent Saturday when Hurd logged 41 plays against the Seahawks.
"Obviously, you know I'm trying to give him a chance," Parcells said. "(Forty-one plays) would be a little high for the normal rookie."
At the start of training camp, I thought the offensive line would prevent the Cowboys from winning the divison. Now, I'm wondering if the receiving corps will be the unit that holds the team hostage.
The club's top three receivers didn't practice Monday. Joining Terrell Owens (sore left hamstring) on the sidelines were Terry Glenn (blisters on his feet) and Patrick Crayton (right ankle sprain). After showcasing linebacker Scott Shanle and defensive end Kenyon Coleman in Seattle, don't be surprised if the Cowboys deal one or possibly both players this week for a veteran receiver.
Of course, all would be right with the Cowboys' world if T.O. would stop babying his hamstring and return to practice.
