The agent for Miles Austin said Tuesday the Dallas Cowboys free-agent wide out from Monmouth University is making a name for himself.
"There's no doubt about it," said Hadley Engelhard of Austin, who lit up the late night television screens Monday with a 48-yard TD catch in the fourth quarter of the Cowboys' 30-7 victory over New Orleans.
"He will be on — whether it's the Cowboys or another team — an (NFL) roster in some capacity, whether it's on the active squad or a practice squad," Engelhard said. "He's too good, he's too athletic not to be."
Austin, whose cell phone Engelhard said is on the blink, could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
The score, on a pass from backup quarterback Tony Romo, marked the first professional catch for the 6-foot-3 Austin who reeled in a school-record 33 touchdown passes for Monmouth.
Engelhard said Austin has been contributing on special teams and made two special teams tackles vs. the Saints.
"He's doing very well," Engelhard said. "He's showing the upside that he has and the ability to grasp the offense.
"Going from Monmouth to the Dallas Cowboys is no small feat."
The touchdown occured when Romo found the undrafted Austin streaking down the right sideline.
"It was supposed to be a quicker type play, get the ball out," Romo said. "I pumped and I read the corner's eyes, and Miles did too. And he just took off."
Austin appears to be competing for a roster spot with 2006 free-agent rookie Sam Hurd from Northern Illinois and 2005 free agent Jamaica Rector from Northwest Missouri State who spent last season on the Dallas practice squad.
Hurd, with a team-high seven catches in preseason, has been starting along with 11th-year pro Terry Glenn in the absence of Terrell Owens and Patrick Clayton. Rector's five receptions are tied with Glenn for No. 2 in the preseason.
Though he did not comment specifically on Austin, Dallas coach Bill Parcells said his young receivers have been impressive. "They're sure getting enough work to give us a good evaluation," Parcells said. "I think they're improving and that's a good thing."
