Dallas Cowboys kicker Mike Vanderjagt is listed as questionable for the opener Sunday in Jacksonville, coach Bill Parcells said today.
The questionable category in the NFL means a player has a 50-50 chance of playing.
Vanderjagt, who is nursing a groin injury, missed two chip shot field goals in overtime of the Cowboys’ 10-10 tie with Minnesota last Thursday in the preseason finale.
Two other players joined Vanderjagt on the injury report the team sends to the league. Offensive tackle Flozell Adams (calf) and linebacker Bradie James (groin) are also questionable.v Vanderjagt, Adams and James all practiced today, Parcells said.
Shaun Suisham would handle the kicking chores if Vanderjagt misses the game. Adams’ backup is rookie Pat McQuistan. Ryan Fowler would replace James.
Parcells said receiver Terrell Owens, who missed three preseason games with a hamstring injury, also continues to practice and seems to be gaining some chemistry with quarterback Drew Bledsoe.
“He hasn’t had any problems that I know of since he returned to practice,” Parcells said of Owens. “He seems to be kind of accelerating his progress as we go along.”
Parcells said it’s too early to tell if Owens will play a major role in the offensive gameplan.
“I would hope he could be, but I can’t tell you that,” Parcells said. “Stamina is a big thing in this game. If we were going to go play in Montana somewhere and it was going to be 45 degrees that might be easier, but it is going to be difficult on all the players in this game. But it’s not like we are living in the Yukon and they are in the tropics.”
Parcells said Skyler Green is now working at running back rather than receiver. Green, the team’s fourth-round draft pick, is on the practice squad.
